Amy Lewis is one of those people who doesn’t get the credit she deserves (and she doesn’t expect any either.) She took an animal shelter with a bad reputation and turned it into “the little shelter that could.” She stood by their no-kill promise with a 90 percent save rate and she made all of us believe in the goodness of humans again.
That’s why we’re so sad to see today she has announced her exit as executive director of the SPCA of Niagara. But we know she’s meant to do great things in this world and she certainly will. The time and dedication she’s given to our local animals has been outstanding. She literally lived and breathed the SPCA and she wasn’t just a face for it either. In fact, she didn’t like any spotlight unless it was for the animals. She always worked directly with each and every dog, cat, bird, rat, pig, you name it, to see that every animal was happy and healthy. Even bringing animals back to her own home to give them the love and care they deserved. But now that the shelter is back on its feet, Lewis is at peace knowing that everyone will be OK without her.
“This is a bittersweet announcement for me. I am so proud of all we have accomplished at the shelter and it is because of all of those accomplishments and my supportive staff and volunteers that I can go on to pursue my personal goals. With the announcement of my departure at the end of August, I want to thank all of you for being a part of this incredible journey that has not only affected my life in a tremendous way, but the lives of so many animals. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support.” — Amy Lewis
Thank you, Amy, for all you’ve done for these animals and our local community. It will never be forgotten.
