According to family and friends, Marcia Nachreiner of North Tonawanda is a woman of courage and strength. Her kindness and good heart has touched many, which is why the community is rallying around her at her time of need.

Marcia, wife of Michael and mother of David and Daniel, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in January 2015. ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, takes away many of the human functions that we take for granted. Sadly, there is no cure. Marcia, a very active woman who loved to cook and spend time with family, can no longer walk, grasp objects, stand, or talk. While the disease has robbed her of her physical abilities, her son David Nachreiner says it hasn’t robbed her spirit.

“It has not and will not take her drive, her fight, her sturdy resilience to stand tall and mentally tackle ALS head on. She refuses to let it. The spirit and faith that my mother possesses shakes me to my core. It is so amazing to watch her fight this disease and keep a smile on her face all day. Watching her and being there for her strengthens me,” said David.

Not only is the family sticking by Marcia’s side for physical and mental support, they are also helping her financially. Shortly after being diagnosed, Marcia was unable to work – causing her to lose her job and her health insurance. So far $27,000 has been raised to help with medical bills via a GoFundMe page, but the out-of-pocket cost for caring for someone with ALS is estimated to be $250,000. Marcia’s in-home care, medical insurance, and therapy add up quickly, so the family is throwing a fundraiser to help alleviate some of the expense.

“Music for Marcia” will be held 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 23 at St. Johnsburg Fire Hall, 7165 Ward Rd., North Tonawanda. The event will feature a pig roast, basket raffle, chowder, draft beer, and music. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling David at 696-2876, Daniel at 425-2478 or Brandi at 263-2906. You may also donate to Mission for Marcia: Fighting ALS here: www.gofundme.com/mission-for-marcia.

“A family is only as strong as the love it shares with each other. The strength and support of our family and friends throughout this process has been overwhelming. And now, as we reach out to the community, we ask that you join us in supporting and celebrating a woman who has dedicated her life to being a great friend, mother, and wife,” said David.
