North Tonawanda daughter desperate for help with benefit for ill father: ‘I don’t know what to do anymore’

A North Tonawanda woman is struggling to find help for her father's benefit April 29 and it's breaking her heart.

A North Tonawanda woman is reaching out to the commmunity for help with her ill father’s benefit on Sunday, April 29. Mark “Mongie” Mongeon was diagnosed with bladder cancer and his medical bills are adding up. His daughter just wanted to do something kind by throwing him a benefit, but she’s having a difficult time. She is now asking for any help she can get.

“I just wanted him to have a night about him for once where he could see people care about him and love him,” said Ashley Mongeon. “I am not looking for any big ticket items, but if someone or anyone who could help me get together a couple more baskets, anything, it would mean the world. I’m at a loss and I’m not sure what to do to be honest. I’m so scared I’m running out of time. He deserves the most magnificent night in the world, he really does.”

After two unsuccessful surgeries, Mark will be undergoing a series of special treatments in the upcoming weeks. These treatments are meant as a “last attempt” to eradicate remaining cancer cells in the muscle lining before it has a chance to penetrate through the muscle tissue and spread elsewhere in the body. The benefit will not only help relieve some of the financial burden, but also life his spirits and give him something to look forward to during this extremely trying time for him as well.

“My dad is a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda and always the first person to lend a hand to many local businesses, local WNY events, family, friends or whoever is in need, on call… day or night,” said Ashley.

Mark is also a master electrician by trade and part owner and operator of Apparent Choice Electric. In his spare time, he is a licensed “pyrotechnician for Skylighters. He has lit up the sky at many shows locally all throughout Western New York. From local concerts and hundreds of events to the recent 2018 ball drop in North Tonawanda that he accomplished triumphantly only two days after his surgery, catheter in tow!

“This man is truly the definition of persistence and has not let anything slow him down for a single second,” said Ashley. “He has been a staple in the community and Western New York for the past 30 years. From “lighting up the room” for local businesses, to “lighting up the sky” for all those special, magic moments he has given us. Please join us in returning the favor and “lighting” up his life during this strenuous time.”

“Fireworks for Mark,” a spaghetti dinner and basket auction, will be held in his honor 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. April 29 at Knights of Columbus, 755 Erie Avenue, North Tonawanda. Tickets are $25.

Any donation from local businesses and working professionals in the area to help sponsor the fundraiser would be gratefully appreciated. Please contact Ashley Mongeon at 716-423-9121 or email fireworksformark@gmail.com.

“We just want to let him know how much we all love, appreciate, and are sincerely there for him, no matter what happens,” said Ashley.
