A high school friend of mine posted this beautiful story on social media and I felt compelled to share it with all of you. She is a flight attendant who travels the world and meets unique and interesting people every day. Most recently she met a woman that changed her vocabulary forever.
“I’m not alone, I’m by myself.”
When I was waiting for the concierge, I met a loud old woman who was clearly upset with a resort issue and I began small talking with her. I found out she was from New York and I told her my family was from Long Island. She said, “Oh, are you here with your family?” “No, I’m alone.” She paused. “Sweetheart, you’re by yourself, but you’re not alone. There is a difference.”
After talking for a while more, she held out her hand and said, “Thank you for talking to me today and thank you for traveling by yourself. It made my day to know that another lady is out there wandering, too.” I said, “High fives for strong independent women!” She laughed and gave me five.
The next day I went to a restaurant and the host said, “Just one?” “Actually, I’m by myself. I’ll just head to the bar!” That sweet little interaction changed my vocabulary forever.
