A group of Meals on Wheels employees recently got together to make a very sweet volunteer named Mercede’s day.
Here’s the story from Don Simmons Jr., an employee at the nonprofit Meals on Wheels of Western Broome County in Endicott, N.Y.
“So there’s this very special lady that comes to volunteer at my work twice a week. She’s 21 and thinks there’s a Santa (which of course there is), but for six years now she’s wished for a Tom Brady jersey and has never gotten one. Now I’m a huge Bills fan so don’t hate on me, but we made that girl’s wish come true. Not only did I get her the Brady jersey, but I got her the Super Bowl one with Tom Brady’s signature on it. This made her day and then some. There’s nobody in this world that deserves this more than she does. I also put my own little note in there saying “Let’s Go Buffalo Bills” and she yelled at me. Hope this brings some smiles to your faces like it did to mine!”
Simmons says Mercedes has only been volunteering for a few months, but she loves it and is a very hard worker. She cups up fruit cups and packs the cold lunch bags and sets them out on the corresponding routes to be packed and ready for delivery. She then helps serve the veggies on the hot lunch line.
“Our volunteers are certainly vital to keep us up and going. The dedication they have to come in every day and deliver anywhere from 150 to 175 meals a day no matter what the weather is like is amazing,” said Simmons.
