Evette Phillips of Buffalo is no stranger to giving back. She recently received the 2017 Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Compass House, a shelter in Buffalo for the homeless for at risk youth.
The award was well deserved.
“For the past four years I’ve been feeding the homeless men and women in downtown Buffalo,” said Phillips. “I make hot meals and pass them out near the library and the bus station and since last year I’ve been cooking meals and spending time with homeless kids at The Compass House.”
If that’s not enough, she is now planning a Christmas party for a few homeless and less fortunate families on Saturday, Dec. 16 at the Gloria J. Park Community Center at her own expense – just because.
“I believe if you want a change in your community you must start with yourself,” said Phillips. “I have a few more families that need help, so if anyone is interested please contact me.”
She is also hosting a “Feed the Homeless Drive” 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve. She will have tables and chairs set up outside and will serve the homeless food across from the Buffalo Public Library.
“I just need volunteers to help me cook and serve food,” she said. “No matter what the weather, this is happening. I also want to give them hats, gloves, and scarves.”

When she’s not helping others, Phillips runs her own catering business called KP Smokehouse BBQ and she has her own event planning business, Memorable Moments.
The name seems fitting for what this remarkable woman does to give back to the community.
