While the new Oishei Children’s Hospital is amazingly beautiful on the inside, one small, but big thing the hospital will be making a change with is the nurses’ colorful, kid friendly scrubs that sick children have come to know and love. The new required uniform will be a solid grey.
“Both my kiddos have had their experiences at Children’s Hospital,” said Melissa Switzer. “One of the things that brought out some smiles and got them talking were the characters on the nurses scrubs. The nurses will no longer be allowed to wear kid friendly scrubs. They must wear grey. While some may think it is just a small uniform change, and shouldn’t make a difference – sometimes to those small eyes, it’s the small things that make all the difference. I hope they revisit this policy.”
Lindsay Bernard, RN, says she will miss wearing the colorful scrubs, too.
“I work at at Highpointe on the long term care pediatric unit. We work with children for all our kids’ appointments, follow ups, and of course emergencies. Our doctors work at both facilities. Whatever the rest of what Kaleida chooses to do, we strongly feel that Children’s and us should be exempt from a bland and dreary uniform. No facility wants the boring gray, but especially for kids,” she said.
Bernard added that she believes Kaleida’s choice to have solid color uniforms is so patients and families know who to go to for their medical needs.
“The idea is for a more professional look and for your job title to be known by just looking at you down the hall. This policy is brand new for nurses,” she added.
