When we started seeing beautiful photos of rescue pets pop up on our radar, we knew we had to find out who took these incredible photos. We caught up Marlee & Me Photography owner, Marlee Coulter, to find out what inspired her to donate her time and talents to help these amazing animals in need.
What inspired you to create Marlee & Me Photography?
The idea to create Marlee & Me Photography (formerly Marlee & Me 716) started two years ago when my parents adopted a very shy, rescue dog that wasn’t doing well in the shelters. They saw his picture online and fell in love! I realized that photos of adoptable animals needed to showcase their personalities as much as possible to give them a greater chance of having someone fall for them.
How long have you been taking photos of adoptable animals?
I started Marlee & Me Photography last year and have photographed nearly 100 adoptable dogs and cats for several different local shelters. I mainly photograph for Diamonds in the Ruff Animal Rescue, but I don’t say “no” to anyone! Foster parents and people associated with other shelters have asked for my services, and I will go anywhere to help out.
Why is it so important for you to promote rescue animals in need of homes?
Hearing the stories of where these dogs and cats have come from is heartbreaking. They have been abandoned, neglected, emotionally and sometimes physically harmed. They need every chance they can get to have a better life. Every animal I’ve met through the rescues have been wonderful. Sometimes they just want to play, other times they melt into my arms. I’ve become a huge advocate for “adopt don’t shop.” There are so many animals out there who need to find their forever homes!
What’s in store for the future of Marlee & Me Photography?
My small business has recently expanded and teamed up with Buffalo Big Print. Together, we are focusing on providing photography for everyone! We have a new studio space where pets can come in and have a nice, fun shoot. I also travel to homes and other locations to accommodate any situation and to make sure the animal feels comfortable. My new website, marleeandmephotography.com has more information about booking sessions. Shelter and rescue photography will always be volunteer work for me. Helping just one animal get adopted faster by having a cute or engaging photo makes it worth it. If you are thinking about getting a new pet – please look into adopting! You could be saving a life.
