Matt Wittmeyer of Rochester has taken thousands of photos in his lifetime, so when his most recent photo of Bills fans covered in snow at yesterday’s game received national attention he was stunned.
“I actually posted it on the ride home and saw that a few minutes later an ESPN reporter tweeted it out. Then my phone went crazy with notifications. Funny enough, I’m a professional commercial photographer and this is the photo that gets attention. I was just there with my kids and my 12-year-old was like, ‘Dad, look at the lady next to us.’ She hadn’t moved in awhile and the snow really built up.”
Wittmeyer said he didn’t realize the photo, which he took on his iPhone8, was going viral until his friends and relatives were seeing it pop on different social media accounts and tagged him as the photographer.
“My fingers were so frozen I could barely use it,” he laughed.
Wittmeyer says he doesn’t know what the future holds after this photo, but he does know that he and his son shared an amazing memory.
“My 12-year-old thinks it’s cool, so there’s that. I’ve been emailed by a few newspapers and agencies from all over the world about using the photo. I think the perception of Buffalo from outside WNY is that we somehow live in Antarctica. I have to admit, it was a fun game to experience, so to share our passion for the Bills with the rest of the world (even if they think we’re crazy) that’s a win. Now, we just need a playoff win.”
