A local seventh grader is going above and beyond to help shelter dogs! Paige Benn, a Tonawanda Middle School student and Cadette Girl Scout with Troop 305544, has been working on her Silver Award for months and her big project happens today!
The event is called “Fun Run for Dogs” and it’s happening today, May 1, until noon. The race begins at 10 a.m. at Veteran’s Park (Shelter #3) in Tonawanda to benefit Open Arms Rescue of WNY.
Paige’s dog Johnny “Cash” was rescued by Open Arms in 2021 in Nashville so the organization holds a special place in Paige’s heart.
“Cash helped me through the loss of my dog Ozzy and has comforted me through other hard times. He is such a great addition to our family and OARWNY is such an amazing organization,” said Paige.
Participants pay their fee to participate in the run by donating items that will be used for the second part of Paige’s project. She will be making adoption bags for rescued dogs that are adopted through OARWNY.
In addition to the run, there will be dog-related vendors and adoptable dogs guests can meet. There will also be a costume contest, a hot dog stand and a photo booth. Once all donations are received, Paige will fill all the items needed for dogs including a collar, leash, poop bags, dishes, balls, rope toys and more. Paige will also be doing a presentation on the importance of “Adopt, Don’t, Shop.”
