Sweet Buffalo Rocks, a community project that was launched in the winter, is making a rockin’ impact on Western New York. Credit it to the nice weather or the fact that Western New Yorkers are awesome, but the simple project of painting rocks and hiding them all around Western New York is spreading like wildfire.
“Every day more and more rocks are posted in the Sweet Buffalo Rocks Facebook group that are either being hidden or found,” said Kimberly LaRussa, Sweet Buffalo blogger who started the project. “It makes my day to see families enjoying time together by painting rocks and hiding them for others to find. And from the looks of it, it really makes the day of those who find the rocks, too.”
LaRussa said the idea came about from a group in Florida called Martin County Rocks and when she saw there was no project like this in Buffalo, she decided to start one to spread the joy in Western New York as well.
“It’s such a simple thing, but it makes so many people happy. It gets people out of their houses and into the community. It brings people together and creates a sense of unity. People make friends in the Sweet Buffalo Rocks group that would have never met if it wasn’t for the project.”
Painted rocks with the words “Sweet Buffalo Rocks FB” on the bottom can be found all around, so be sure to keep you eye out. Rocks are hidden at local parks, festivals, and events. Communities in participation include Niagara and Erie Counties. Some folks even bring the rocks on vacation with them to spread the “Buffalove.”
