Tired mommies, it’s OK to want some ‘me’ time

It's not easy being a mom and sometimes we just need a break. A well deserved break.

It’s not easy being a mom and sometimes we just need a break – a well deserved break.

You see, I’m a mom, a wife, a pet owner, a full-time employee, a blogger, a small business owner, and I can add more to my to-do list, but those are the #1 priorities I have. After a long day of being all of these things, all I want to do is watch junk television for one hour. I don’t drink but the occasional glass of wine, I don’t go out with friends much (although they always invite me and remember to include me. Thank you, guys!), and I don’t have many hobbies because writing is my hobby… and my job. So really the only thing that relaxes me and keeps me sane after a long day is a good show and some munchies.

But somehow, someway, someone still needs me in the evening bedtime hours. I’ll put a show on and I’ll have to pause it 100 times just to get one sentence in. I’ve talked to many a mom who says even though they are sleep deprived they will stay up until 2 a.m. just because it’s the only time they get some “me” time. It’s insane, but it’s true.

We all need some “me” time more often than we get it. It makes us better parents and better humans. Sometimes we feel very guilty about this (I know I do), but we shouldn’t. I cherish every second I spend as a mom, but being a parent is a lot of work and a lot of sacrifice. No matter how much you love your child, it’s okay to love yourself a little bit, too.
