Eight-year-old Michael DeLaPlante came up with a great idea two years ago – he wanted to collect socks to give to children at Women and Children’s Hospital.
“He just decided to do it on his own,” said Suzanne DeLaPlante, Michael’s mom. “Hospitals don’t usually have socks for kids and he didn’t want them to get cold feet.”
The first year of his holiday sock drive, WGRZ Channel 2 News picked up the story which helped Michael collect 1,300 socks! He was so excited that the next year he decided to recruit some family and friends.
Michael is now collecting socks for kids at Oishei Children’s Hospital with the help of his sister, Morgan, and friends, Bailey, Tully, Michael, and Hayden. Together the group has already collected 260 pairs of socks and they hope to gather more before their drop-off at the hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The socks are all fun socks with cartoon characters and holiday themes for the kids to enjoy.
“Not only did he want them to have warm feet, but he also wanted them to have ‘cool’ socks,” said Suzanne.
If you would like to help these outstanding kids with their mission to help other children keep their feet warm at the hospital this winter, you may donate socks to Daily Planet and Dash’s, both on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, before Dec. 19.
