It was such an amazing day for me on Thursday as my closest friend, Kate Glaser, and I, had the chance to speak at our alma mater Buffalo State College.
I had no idea the amount of overwhelming nostalgia I would feel walking on campus again. A lot has changed since I left six years ago, but the happiness I felt in my heart remained the same.
For some college grads, college was just a place for them to receive a degree to help them land a good job, but for me Buffalo State was much more than that. Buffalo State gave me guidance from amazing professors who I still look for guidance today and friendships like the one Kate and I were able to build. Buffalo State gave me the tools I needed to believe in myself and figure out what I was really meant to do in this life. It was more than just college to me, it was my second home.
When Kate asked me to join her in speaking to future students at Buffalo State I was honored. Kate and I first met in an editing room when we were both aspiring journalists. She complimented me on my work and I complimented her on hers and from then on we somehow formed a friendship that will now last a lifetime. It’s a very special thing to meet someone who has the same goals and dreams as you, and I found that in Kate.
When it came time for us to speak we were given 15 minutes to share how Buffalo State helped mold our success and while 15 minutes seemed like too much time to talk at first, we were both amazed at how much we had to say. The amount of stories we both could have shared on how Buffalo State made us the people we are today were endless. I was so proud to be able to represent this great college and I know Kate was, too.
It was only a few short months ago I saw an old college photo of Kate and a few other Buffalo State students. I remember commenting on how I knew almost every person in the photo and how they all became a great success. I think if any incoming student takes a photo with their group of friends at Buffalo State and looks at it a few years after graduation they will make that same observation I did.
Buffalo State is an amazing college and I will always be proud to say I’m a Buffalo State alum.
