Retired Marine creates United States rocks project

George Kurtz, a retired U.S. Marine, wanted to get in on the rock painting phenomena, but in his own amazingly unique way.

George Kurtz, a retired U.S. Marine, wanted to get in on the rock painting phenomena, but in his own amazingly unique way.

“A few weeks ago my daughter wanted to go to the beach because it was a beautiful day. So, to pass the time, I decided to search for rocks to paint. I started seeing a few rocks that were shaped like states, so I decided to see how many I could find.”

In three hours time, Kurtz had strategically found and placed 50 rocks that were in the shape of states.

“I found the first series of 50 states and I’ve been improving since then, finding better examples of states.”

Kurtz, who spent 27 years in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1987 to 2014 and retired with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant, has been spreading joy with his United States rock project all around Western New York. He and his wife and daughter live in Westfield, N.Y. and they are part of the “Rocks Around Westfield” Facebook group. He recently joined our group “Sweet Buffalo Rocks” and put smiles on every member’s face with his creative project. He is now looking to make posters of the rocks once his project is fully completed. Amazing.

Thank you for your service, George, and thank you for spreading joy.
