12-year-old Amherst girl collects cans to raise funds for random acts of kindness

Autumn Galdys is only 12 years old, but that won’t stop her from changing the world…one can at a time.

For the past two years, Autumn has been collecting cans to raise funds to give back to others. Her mission began when her parents suggested she collect cans for spending money, but when she heard students needed supplies at her elementary school, she used the money to do just that.

”She took a whole wagon of supplies to her principal that year,” said Melissa Galdys, Autumn’s mom.

It made Autumn so happy to help that she decided she wanted to continue collecting cans to do random acts of kindness in her neighborhood and called her mission “Cans for Kids.”

“We suggested maybe she keep 50 percent and donate the other 50 percent, but no, she insisted on raising all the funds to help others. She’s a very special kid,” said Melissa.

Melissa says her daughter has used the funds to buy gift cards to leave on car windshields, donate blessings bags to the homeless that include things like hats, gloves, granola bars, cash and gift cards, and give presents to the mailman. She’s also done things for Children’s Hospital.

“It feels good helping people. Making other people thankful and happy,” said Autumn.

Autumn has also teamed up with Millersport Recycling on Millersport in Amherst. If you’d like to donate your cans with funds going to help Autumn’s cause just let them know to give your funds to Autumn Galdys or Cans for Kids and they will make sure your donation goes to helping this amazing young lady spread kindness all over WNY.
