An Orchard Park mom reached out to Sweet Buffalo to tell us about her favorite superhero on National Superhero Day; her 5-year-old son, Desmond, who was diagnosed with leukemia at the end of January.
“Desmond is my favorite superhero for too many reasons to count. Because he’s 5 years old fighting a terrible disease. Because he sits (amazingly) still and squeezes your one finger when he’s accessed and poked with a needle. Because he went from being a normal 5 year old boy going to kindergarten and learning to ski, playing soccer, and teeball whose life got turned upside down where it’s now consumed with hospital stays, clinic visits, home care nursing, multiple blood draws, chemo infusions, learning how to take a pill. He is one amazing little boy who fights daily and will get through this with all the prayers and well wishes coming his way.”
Desmond’s mom, Meghan Benimoff, said he is doing very well with his treatments so far, but he will be undergoing treatment for at least 2.5 years and won’t be considered cured for at least five. We would like to help Desmond’s mom in sending him some more well wishes, so we are starting a kindness card campaign for him. PS – He loves superheroes!
