It was a beautiful day for local wish kid, Ricky, 9, and his family, as he was honored by the Tonawanda City School District on Thursday, April 6 at a dodgeball tournament benefit at the high school. The school district works hard all year to raise funds for Make-A-Wish WNY children and was excited to be able to sponsor Ricky’s wish to Disney World this week.
“The Tonawanda City School District supports Make-A-Wish each year and this year was no different with the community coming together to fundraise for wishes,” said Kate Glaser, manager of media relations and marketing at Make-A-Wish. “Throughout the school year, students, teachers and staff held dress down days, spirit days, and pitched in money to help bring hope and healing to wish children, like Ricky from Grand Island. It all came together at the dodgeball tournament. Wish kid Ricky was at the tournament and the community celebrated his wish to go to Walt Disney World and honored his courageous fight against his medical condition. With the help of the Tonawanda community, his wish was granted! He left for Disney this week and will be able to make lasting memories with his family. It takes a community to make wishes happen, and the city of Tonawanda wholeheartedly supports that.”
Ricky suffers from life-threatening seizures and is wheelchair bound. Going to Disney World means the world to him and his family and he received a loud applause from the crowd at the event who cheered him on for his upcoming trip.
