WNYers raise money for local children with life-threatening illnesses by auctioning off painted rocks

A few Western New Yorkers are doing their part to give back to the community by… get this… auctioning off rocks!

Yes, that’s right. Members of the Sweet Buffalo Rocks group on Facebook have been auctioning off painted rocks to raise money for children with life-threatening illnesses and the rocks have been going for $60 a set! The idea for an auction was originally started by George Kurtz, a member of the group who said he just wanted to help.

“I like to do the rock auctions for a few reasons…first is they keep the members of the group engaged, second is the smiles my creations bring to the winner, and third, which is most important, the proceeds go to a worthwhile cause. That is probably the most important thing,” said Kurtz.

So far Kurtz has raised $150 for local children with his painted rock auctions, but his idea encouraged others to have rock auctions as well. Laurie Ehlenfield of Amherst did one auction and now she said she’s getting carried away. She’s raised more than $400 so far for local causes.

“I just do it for the kids. They are the ones who matter,” said Ehlenfield. “My daughter, Katlin, and I also raised enough money to send three kids to summer camp with selling our rock tic tac toe boards.”

So far money has been raised for Bentley Hayden, 3, of Buffalo, who is fighting cancer, Sebastian Bradley, 9, of Williamsville, who is battling terminal cancer, Anastasia Rafter, 22 months, of Niagara Falls, who is battling a brain tumor, and TJ Ackley, 10, of Alden, who just found out his cancer is terminal. The Sweet Buffalo Rocks group has also painted hundred of rocks to brighten children’s days.
